Longhair dachshund information. Most people are more familiar with smooth coated dachshunds (short hair) but there are a lot of good things about longhairs that people might not know.  The temperament
of longs is supposed to be more mellow and laid back than smooths, and we have found that to be generally true. Longhairs don't shed much, in fact they probably shed less than smooths. Longhairs do not have an undercoat, so they don't shed in the spring. Longs feel softer. Longs don't really need all that much grooming to keep them looking good. A little brushing once a week does  just fine, and if you don't brush them at all, they still look good. Longs tend to accept the cold Wisconsin winter temperatures better than smooths. There is one thing about longs though that is not as good.  They do have a tendency to pick up burrs more easily than smooths, but they are so cute they can be forgiven that one little problem.
