Longhair dachshund information. Most people are more familiar with smooth coated dachshunds (short hair) but there are a lot of good things about longhairs that people might not know. The temperament
of longs is supposed to be more mellow and laid back than smooths, and we have found that to be generally true. Longhairs don't shed much, in fact they probably shed less than smooths. Longhairs do not have an undercoat, so they don't shed in the spring. Longs feel softer. Longs don't really need all that much grooming to keep them looking good. A little brushing once a week does just fine, and if you don't brush them at all, they still look good. Longs tend to accept the cold Wisconsin winter temperatures better than smooths. There is one thing about longs though that is not as good. They do have a tendency to pick up burrs more easily than smooths, but they are so cute they can be forgiven that one little problem.
The puppies all went to their new homes, and from all reports that we have had, they are adjusting well. The moms are again running around and playing like puppies themselves, so apparently they are happy to have the puppies be somebody else's job to take care of. The puppies were fun, but it is nice to have our living room back again, at least for a while.
Pinkie
Pinkie was the first born, and has the lightest color of the puppies. Pinky says that she is no longer available because she wants to live with Brian in Oshkosh. Her new name will be Winnie!
Anna Belle
Anna Belle has developed a redder color than the others, and a darker streak down her back. Anna Belle has already decided that she wants to live with Ashley in Waunakee, so she is not available. He new name will be Zoey!
Dena
When Dena was younger, she was quite a bit darker than the others, especially around the nose, but is now one of the lightest . Dena has never met Jana from Rochester Minnesota, but she says she would like to go and be her puppy as long as she doesn't have to be a Viking fan. Her new name will be Ellie!
Dusty
Dusty is the only boy in Skkylar's litter. He thinks that it is unfair that his sisters all found new homes before he found one. He says that he is TWICE as cuddly as any of those girl puppies. Dusty was pretty sure he wanted to live with Amanda in Madison, but now that he has met her, he is positive. He also thinks his new name, Remington, is very special.
Ellie Mae and Chopper have really done it right this time. They have produced seven of the cutest puppies imaginable. Chopper is walking around looking pretty proud of himself, and of course he is passing out his usual cigar shaped rawhide bones.
Here are some pictures of Skkylar and the puppies together.
But first..........How do you fit 7 puppies into a miniature dachshund? I will leave on the picture at the left for a while so you can see. I was calling her my Ellie-mellon. The planned visit by Roger Goodell, the NFL Commissioner, who wanted to sign her belly, has been cancelled. Since she had her puppies, she no longer looks like a football, so he is no longer interested.
Ellie Mae and Chopper's puppies...
range from an extremely light cream to a rich red color with lots of shades in between. Since Ellie Mae is a smooth, and Chopper is a longhair, the puppies can turn out to be either smooth or longhair. Unlike Skkylar's puppies, these should not get lighter as they get older. They should stay about the same, or maybe get a little darker.......notice I said should. A couple of them seem to be getting lighter. I guess we have to wait and see how they turn out.
Cagney was the first puppy born. He is a dark red in color with a large white blaze on his chest. When Becky, Erika, and Jake from Verona came to visit the puppies, Cagney said..... you dirty rat...
No he really didn't, and he looked very pleased with them holding him. (they think they picked him out, but he really picked them himself) His new name will be Teddy!
Coralee
Coralee is a very light clear cream puppy. She is a smooth (short hair) Coralee found out that Jon in Madison has another dachshund that is lonely. She says she wants to move in too. Of course, being a dachsund, Coralee thinks she will immediatly be in charge of the household. Her new name will be Lily Marie.
Corky
Cloe
Cloe is right in the middle as far as color. Three lighter than she, and three darker. Cloe is also a longhair. Cloe met Tricia from Madison and it was love at first snuggle. Cloe's new name will be Gracie Ann!
Carmen
Carmen started out as the darkest of the girls, and the 3rd darkest overall, but she has been getting lighter. I wouldn't have expected that. Carmen is no longer available because she has picked out Michelle to live with in Mosinee. She is already looking forward to bossing around the lab that already lives there.
Cricket
Here are some pictures of Ellie Mae and the puppies together.
Corky is the 3rd lightest puppy and is a longhair. Corky met Donna and Scott from Slinger, WI and all three of them knew right away that Corky had a new home.
Cricket is the lightest cream color of the litter. It might be possible to have a lighter colored dachshund, but I have never seen one. Cricket has found a home with Jeanette. She already has a puppy from Skkylar and Choppers last litter, so there will be a built in playmate for Cricket. Her new name will be Cloe.
For the pictures with the blue background, I put the puppies in order of colors, darkest to lightest....several times. They didn't stay like that very long. Just try telling a group of seven dachshunds of any age where to stay and see how much cooperation you get! Not much. I did get one with them still in order.

Chauncey Chauncey is the second darkest puppy. He is a longhair. He keeps being a puzzle for me. First I couldn't figure out if he was a long or smooth, and now he seems to be getting lighter in color every day. I wouldn't have expected that. He really looks quite a bit like Skkylar's puppies, at least right now. Anyway, he is a real cutie and whatever he turns out to look like, he is a great puppy. Chauncey found Jim and Janine to be just the people he has been waiting for. He will be living in Madison.
All the puppies have found new homes, but I do know of some others available from other breeders. Contact us if you are interested.
