DOXIE INFO
Dachshunds, as you would guess, were developed in Germany. They were originally bred to be hunting dogs. They needed to have a fearless and tenacious attitude, because they had to go down into a badger’s burrow underground, and kill or drag out the badger. The European badger, while not as fierce as the American variety, is still a pretty nasty critter. The miniature dachshund was later developed to hunt rabbits, in the same way----underground.

Today Dachshunds are best known as loving family pets. If you find that your doxie likes digging holes, he is just doing what comes naturally for him. Also, this affinity for going underground, will often show up in a doxies favorite place to sleep or nap. Unless you crate train your doxie, you will find him UNDER the covers of your bed, or under a blanket on the sofa during the day. Although they still can and do participate in earthdog  events where they still do go underground, for most people they are just pets.

Dachshunds make excellent alert/watchdogs as nothing escapes their attention. They are wonderful house dogs, as they do not have as much of a "doggy" odor as most dogs. They do not shed much and only require minimal grooming if you stick to the short haired (smooth) variety or the longhairs. Wirehairs require more grooming.  Doxies will adapt well to most living arrangements...although lots of stairs are not the best for a dachshund.  They are adaptable as far as exercise goes.  They have remarkable stamina, and unless you are a marathoner, they will walk as far as you are willing to take them. They are good with MOST other pets...but please remember what they were developed to do! They love gentle children.... of course small kids and dogs should always be supervised, regardless of the breed. Dachshunds are great therapy dogs and do well in obedience and agility, although one must remember that they are a HOUND and must sometimes see “what’s in it for them” before obeying.  A Doxie must be fully trained before being trusted off leash, and even then they need to be watched closely, as they like to follow their noses and tend to become TEMPORARILY DEAF if they are following an interesting scent, or see a squirrel. They see no danger in moving cars.  Also, remember hounds are bred to think for themselves on a hunt.  There is no one down that badger hole with them to tell them what to do.  If you are used to, and like, the kind of dog that gives you instant, unquestioned, obedience, DO NOT GET A HOUND, a dachshund or any other variety. They are bred to think, not blindly obey. To people who love doxies, this is one of their most endearing qualities.

Dachshunds can be noisy, (they like to bark) they can also be prone to separation anxiety (They REALLY miss you!) and are sometimes hard to housebreak. (Doxies tend to think this way---It’s raining hard outside- I hate rain-I know I’m supposed to go outside to pee- I know I might  get punished if I get caught - I probably won’t get caught - even if I do get caught, the punishment won’t be as bad as going out in the rain)  All can be corrected with proper training, and patience.

Many people are only familiar with red or black and tan doxies, but
dachshunds come in many colors including: BLACK and TAN, RED, CHOCOLATE and TAN, BLUE and TAN, ISSABELLA/FAWN and TAN, CREAM, WHEATEN, WILDBOAR, BLACK and CREAM, SOLID BLACK, SOLID CHOCOLATE.

They also have several different patterns including: DAPPLE, DOUBLE DAPPLE, BRINDLE, SABLE, and PIEBALD.

Dachshunds come in three coat types: SMOOTH, WIRE and LONG.

You can take any color, add it to any pattern, and have it in any coat type. (that is not quite true, as there are some combinations that aren’t possible-but not many)  So, there are almost endless possibilities in combining these choices. I have read that Dachshunds come in more variations that any other breed of dog!

There is always confusion about the difference between Limited AKC Registration, and Full AKC Registration. Full Registration is easy. The dog is registered as a purebred dog. The dog can be entered in any AKC event or show, and any puppies the dog has can also be registered as a purebred dog. (assuming the dog it is bred to also has Full AKC Registration)

Limited AKC Registration is a little different. The dog is still a 100% purebred dog, but any puppies that the dog might have are not eligible for AKC registration. The following is a quote from the AKC explaining Limited AKC registration.

Limited Registration

Limited Registration means that the dog is registered but no litters produced by that dog are eligible for registration.

Chapter 3, Section 4A of the AKC's Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline states the following: "Limited Registration may be requested for a dog when application for individual registration of the dog is submitted, provided the application, together with a request for such limitation, is filed by the owner(s) of the litter at birth.

No offspring of a dog for which Limited Registration has been granted is eligible for registration. Each registration certificate for such dog shall carry notice of the limitation, and the limitation shall continue, regardless of any change of ownership, unless and until the owner(s) of the litter at birth shall apply to AKC for remov
A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. It is eligible, however, to be entered in any other licensed or member event. These events include: Obedience, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Agility and Earthdog.

What does this mean to the average person who is buying a puppy for a pet, having it spayed/neutered, and probably will never attend a dog show much less enter one?      It means that paying for Full registration is meaningless.

What happens if I don't  register my puppy with the AKC at all, not even Limited Registration?  Absolutely nothing. You are already assured you are buying a purebred AKC puppy, The puppy's litter is AKC registered. You are given the AKC Litter Number upon purchase. Sassy Doxies will also provide you with copies of theThree Generation Pedigrees for both the parents of your puppy.

Does this mean that sending in your AKC Limited Registration is meaningless?             Not at all. There are many benefits to registration. We are just pointing out that registration is optional. You should go to the AKC website and see what they offer. Then you can decide.
Limited VS. Full AKC Registation
